Can you use NDIS funding for a pram wagon?
Share
In the context of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), it's important to understand that the NDIS aims to fund supports that are considered reasonable and necessary for an individual with a disability to live an ordinary life and participate in the community. While the NDIS covers a broad range of supports and services, including assistive technology, modifications, and daily living expenses, the funding decisions are based on whether an item or service meets the criteria of being reasonable and necessary for the individual's needs.

Enhancing Mobility
The primary function of a pram wagon is to provide a means of transportation for a child. For children with limited independent mobility, a pram wagon serves as a means of assisted transportation. It allows them to move from one place to another with the support of the wagon, promoting exploration and participation in various environments.
Inclusion in Family Activities
A pram wagon allows the child to be included in family activities, fostering social interactions and emotional well-being. Inclusion in outings promotes a sense of belonging, is essential for building social skills, promoting sensory experiences, and contributes to the child's overall development.
Extended Participation in Activities
A pram wagon enables children with mobility challenges to participate in activities that involve walking longer distances, such as outings to parks, shopping centers, or community events. This extended participation contributes to their social inclusion and engagement in various experiences.
Reducing Fatigue and Physical Strain
For children who experience fatigue or have limited endurance, a pram wagon provides a means of rest during outings. This reduction in physical demand can help manage fatigue, allowing the child to engage in activities for more extended periods.
Children with mobility challenges may also experience physical fatigue or strain when walking for extended periods. A pram wagon provides a supportive and comfortable seating options, reducing the physical demands on the child and allowing them to conserve energy.
Supporting Sensory Regulation
Some pram wagons are designed with features that support sensory regulation. The enclosed space can offer a sense of security, and the child may find comfort in the routine of using the pram wagon during outdoor activities. Depending on the design, a pram wagon can serve as a space for play and exploration. This can be especially beneficial for children who may need breaks or downtime during outings.
Building Confidence
Successfully using a pram wagon can contribute to the child's confidence and self-esteem. As they experience increased independence and participation in activities, they may develop a positive attitude toward mobility and engagement.
Promotion of Social Interaction
Using a pram wagon can facilitate social interactions with peers and family members during outings. The child with mobility challenges can actively participate in group activities and enjoy shared experiences, contributing to their social development.
Encouragement of Outdoor Exploration
A pram wagon encourages outdoor exploration, allowing children with mobility challenges to experience and interact with their surroundings. This exposure to outdoor environments is essential for sensory development and overall well-being.
Behavioural Challenges
Some children with disabilities may exhibit challenging behaviours that make it difficult for parents or caregivers to manage them in public spaces. A Pram Wagon provides a contained and secure environment, minimizing the risk of elopement or other safety concerns.
Transporting Equipment
Some children with disabilities require assistive devices or medical equipment. A Pram Wagon can provide a convenient way to transport such equipment during outings, ensuring that the child has access to necessary supports.
Difficulty with transitioning
Some children, for those with Autism for example, may experience difficulties with transitions. A Pram Wagon can offer a predictable and controlled space, reducing anxiety during outings.
Safety and Security
The enclosed space of a pram wagon provides a secure and stable environment for children with balance or coordination issues. It reduces the risk of falls and provides a controlled space where the child can feel safe during outings.
Funding for a Pram Wagon under NDIS
It's crucial for families and healthcare professionals to work collaboratively with the NDIS and provide clear evidence of how a Pram Wagon is directly related to the child's disability and contributes to their overall well-being. This may involve submitting assessments, reports, and other documentation that highlight the functional impact and necessity of the Pram Wagon in the child's life.
Is a Pram Wagon considered a everyday living expense by the NDIS?
Ultimately, whether a Pram Wagon is funded as part of the NDIS plan will depend on the specific circumstances and the thorough assessment of the child's needs by healthcare professionals.
